Appellation of the month: Saint Georges St. Emilion

Surface area :                    199 ha

Terroir :                               clay-limestone

Anyone who visits this hilly region north of St. Emilion, with its beautiful vineyards, will feel as though they are in Tuscany.

The yield must remain low here, just like with the Grand Crus, with a maximum of 45 hl/ha. The amount of natural sugars must be 187 g/l. Along with many other quality requirements, this ensures that the appellation guarantees high standards of quality.

Here, just like in St. Emilion, it is predominantly merlot that is planted (75%). The other grape varieties in the region are cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon. It is also permitted to use some malbec and carmenère in the blend. Some of the vineyards were already established here in the 18th century.

The terroir is almost exclusively clay-limestone, with many almost uniform slopes providing ideal drainage and perfect sun exposure. All of this contributes to achieving optimal ripeness.

The wines here are very deeply coloured. The nose is beautiful with ripe fruit, including notes of cherry, fresh plum, blackcurrant, and the spiciness of pepper. On the palate, they are often a bit richer in tannins when young, but after some aging, this fully merges with the abundance of ripe fruit. After about seven years post-harvest, there are wonderfully full wines to be discovered with rich, beautifully ripe fruit, mature and balanced, fresh with spicy touches.
