2023 in the Southern Rhône: surprising and brilliant!

Domaine de la Mordorée in presale

The winter and spring of 2023 were marked by a lack of rainfall, followed by constant disease pressure due to continuous humidity and the absence of the Mistral wind, which otherwise keeps the vineyards dry and healthy.

The summer was hot, with a strong heatwave in mid-August. At Domaine de la Mordorée, there were fears of ripening blockage, but the biodynamic vineyard responded very well. The harvest could take place under perfect conditions and at the right moment, which is very important to Ambre Delorme.

The red wines from Domaine de la Mordorée (Lirac red, Châteauneuf-du-Pape red, and Côtes du Rhône) 2023 from the Rhône are very generous, brilliant, and abundantly fruit-forward. These are wines with great purity, delicacy, and delicious fruit, with aging potential for several years (at least 10 years).

At the same time, the 2024 rosé and white wines from the Rhône are being presented: they are balanced and elegant, with incredible finesse. They have a sublime aromatic palette, brilliant fruit, lovely acidity and color. The volumes are small but of excellent quality.

Clos des Papes in presale

Clos des Papes was once in America voted the best wine in the world. Since then, our yearly allocation usually sells out quickly, often already during presale. The hallmark of this Châteauneuf-du-Pape is its incredible elegance and finesse, despite its great concentration.

The 2023 Clos des Papes red is a very balanced vintage, alternating elegance and structure. The tannins are beautifully ripe and silky smooth. The wine is very long, with notes of black fruit (blackcurrant, blackberry), but also always the spicy character of Mourvèdre. This is definitely a vintage to keep in your cellar. The blend is the same as last year: 55% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah, 5% Cunoise, Vaccarèse, Muscardin, and Cinsault. The 2023 has lovely freshness and brilliant fruit, with a cellaring potential of at least 10 years.

The 2024 Clos des Papes white is floral with some hints of anise. On the palate, there are notes of grapefruit, as well as mineral and salty touches. This wine can be enjoyed young or aged, in which case it will evolve into flavors of dried fruit, honey, and roasted almonds. The harvest is not large, and our allocation is limited too—so don’t wait too long!
