Ch. du Tertre - Margaux sold!

In January 2021, it came to our knowledge that the Dutch Albada Jelgersma family, after had run it for 18 years, sold Ch. Du Tertre - Margaux Grand Cru Classé to an insurance company that would hand over the exploitation to the Helfrich family from Alsace, one of the largest wine traders in France (1.2 billion euro turnover), and is known under the name Les Grands Chais de France. The reason for the sale of this magnificent 80ha-property on a ridge of clay and stone is said to be strategic. The Albada Jelgersma family now wants to concentrate more on vinifying in the other castle in Margaux (Ch. Giscours) and also further invest their capital in their Tuscan domain Caiarossa. The vineyards of Ch.Giscours does not all belong to them yet (they do the ‘fermage’ = make wine without the vineyards) and the sale of Ch. du Tertre might help to acquire the rest of Ch. Giscours, who knows? The director of Ch. du Tertre, Alexander van Beek, wants each chateau to independently develop its own typical, different style and says that no synergies were possible between the two.
