Château d’Esclans is situated in the centre of the department ‘Var’, 25 km in the north-west of the city Fréjus at the Mediterranean coast. The original castle (of which only the cellars remain) goes back to the 12th century and was used, given its elocated situation, to observe the intruders (sailors) in the gulf of Fréjus. After being in hands of the Perraud family (1955-1994) and the Swedish retirement fund until 2006, it then belonged to Sacha Lichine from 2006. Sacha Lichine is the son of Alexis Lichine, known from Château Prieuré Lichine in Margaux. Today, the property has 140ha on a total domain of 427ha. The most important grape is the grenache which gives structure combined with volume, freshness and fine aromatic expressions, followed by white vermentino which makes the wine full, deep andopulent while remaining fresh. Other grapes are: Cinsault, Merlot, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Tibouren. The château is known for its very old grenache vines that give a huge concentration to the taste and some of them (on the highest tops of the property) are 90 years old or even older! From the beginning, Sacha Lichine’s objective was to produce premium rosé wines with an own style, namely great wines ‘vins de bouche’ by which he meant tasty rosé wines that are not only aromatic on the nose but that also have a round and diverse taste. The château is ‘owner’, ‘winemaker’ and ‘négociant’ at the same time because a part of the portfolio (3 references) consists wines made of grapes bought at partners-winemaker. You will recognize them by the mention ‘Caves d’Esclans’ namely “The Palm”, “Whispering Angel”, and “Rock Angel”. The other 3 wines come from the château itself (Château d’Esclans, les Clans en Garrus). 6 wines with each their own style.

The Palm is a cuvée made of grapes bought by ‘Caves d’Esclans’ in the Aix-en-Provence region at qualitative winemakers. The clay-lime terroir gives a rosé wine with smooth texture.
