In my search for affordable white and red Burgundy wines, I concluded that Santenay white, neighbour of Chassagne Montrachet, is a good choice. Santenay is quite a big appellation of 407ha, with 140ha Premier Cru. The vineyards to the east of the church are very interesting.
Santenay is not only known for its wines, but also for its thermal springs and casino, that attract many tourists. It is situated between Chassagne and Maranges and has mainly brown lime soils, what explains the minerality and freshness in the white wines! Our selection comes from the qualitative domain Roger Belland, where daughter Julie makes beautiful and fine wines since 2003. New in our range: Santenay Villages ‘Commes-Dessus’. The terroirs for these wines are situated in the same-named hamlet next to the Premier Crus ‘Commes’ and ‘Beauregard’, in the east of Santenay, 500 meters of Chassagne Montrachet. This wine is already very nice to drink and can also be stored for 5 years after harvest. Even more interesting: Santenay white Premier Cru ‘Beauregard’. The name says it all: a terroir with a nice view. It is one of the most reputed terroirs of Santenay, and here too, the terroir gives a beautiful minerality to the wine.
The red wines are very charming and fruity, definitely ‘Les Charmes’, a hamlet with a 1.15ha parcel in the south-east of the village, that delivers very generous, fruity wine with a touch of cherries and liquorice. The wine of 2018 gets 2 stars in the Hachette Guide. The Premier Cru ‘Beauregard’ red has one of the best located vineyards of the appellation with a spectacular view. The vinification is done for 30% ‘vendange entière’ (without destemming), and nevertheless, the wine has a very silky and complex taste, with a nice length.
Given the situation close to Chassagne and the beautiful location of the terroirs, both white and red wines deliver perfect wines with a good price-quality ratio.
